At the onset of a previous Ramadan, Al-‘Allamatul Muhaddith Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) delivered a short, yet profound message to the Muslim Ummah regarding the blessings of this month and the importance of utilizing our time in ‘Ibadah.

The Approach of Ramadan
Shaykh (hafizahullah) said:

It has long been the custom of Muslims, on such blessed religious occasions, to exchange greetings and congratulations. And so, I say to my brothers and loved ones, wherever any Muslim may be, may Allah ‘Azza wa Jalla accept from us all this noble, special and blessed act of obedience that has dawned upon us; the blessed month of Ramadan.

These are blessed days, yet they are brief and swiftly passing.

Truly distant is the one who witnesses this occasion and does not attain the forgiveness of Allah Ta’ala within it. [See more on this: here and here.]

Fasting in this month and performing the Tarawih Salah, as well as engaging in ‘Ibadah on Laylatul Qadr, are all great means of attaining the forgiveness of Allah Ta’ala for those who sincerely seek their reward from Allah.

Making the Most of this Opportunity
The point is, these blessed days are few and passing quickly, so we must seize them through obedience and ‘ibadah (devoted worship).
Among the most important actions is guarding the tongue and preserving our time, by not wasting it aimlessly, or occupying it in worldly talk devoid of benefit.

Hardships Suffered by the Ummah
From another perspective, the Muslim Ummah has endured calamity upon calamity and hardship upon hardship, and Rasulullah (sallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) informed us that:

“Each passing era will be more challenging than the previous, continuing in this manner until you return to your Rabb”

[Refer: Sahih Bukhariy, Hadith: 7068]

Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu), the narrator of this Hadith, said: “I heard it from your Nabiy.”

The great and renowned Tabi’iy Hasan Basriy (rahimahullah) heard [and narrated] his noble Hadith from Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu). Someone raised an objection:
“How can this be, when ʿUmar ibn ‘Abdil ‘Aziz [the just ruler, Demise: 101 A.H] came after Hajjaj [the tyrant ruler, Demise: 95 A.H]?”

Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) replied:

“The Most Merciful surely grant his servants a period/breath of relief”

(Refer: Al Mujalasah wa Jawahirul ‘Ilm of Ad Dinawariy, vol. 5, pg. 129, Al Majmu‘ul Mughith of Abu Musa Al Madiniy, vol. 2, pg. 185, Fathul Bariy, vol. 13, pg. 21 Hadith: 7068)

We await that merciful breath of relief from Allah, Insha Allah, and we ask Him not to let our hope in Him be in vain.

A Prescription for Averting Hardships and Calamities
Ramadan is the month of the Quran Karim, the month of obedience, the month of standing in Salah i.e Tarawih, the month of Du’a and the month of Sadaqah (charity),

And Nothing Averts Calamity Like Du’a and Sadaqah.
So [in addition to Quran recital and Tarawih] let us seize these days, and our entire lives, through Du’a, obedience, and Sadaqah, thereby inviting the mercy of Allah upon us and the removal of calamities by His grace and bounty.

I ask Allah to grant us and the Ummah Rasulullah (sallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) wherever they may be a swift and near relief, by His grace and bounty.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) Said: “Glad tidings be for the one whom Allah uses as a key for (opening) good and a lock for evil.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 238)
