The fast of ‘Ashura is an example of Islam preserving the distinct identity of a Muslim.
During one of Al-‘Allamatul Muhaddith Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah’s (hafizahullah) journeys to Uzbekistan, which coincided with the day of ‘Ashura, he mentioned:
“Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) prescribed for us the Sunnah of fasting on the day of ‘Ashura together with a day before it or a day after it.“
The reason for this [adding a day before or after] is that when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) came to Madinah Munawwarah, he saw the Jews fasting on this day. He asked them about it, and they said: “This is the day on which Allah saved Musa.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said to them: “We are more entitled to Musa than you.”

He therefore prescribed for us the Sunnah of fasting on this day, out of happiness and gratitude to Allah Ta‘ala for saving Sayyiduna Musa (‘alayhis salam).
[Furthermore,] Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) wanted to establish a distinctive feature for the Muslim that differentiates him from the disbeliever. Hence, so that we do not resemble the Jews in fasting only the day of ‘Ashura, he commanded us to fast a day before it or a day after it.”
Preserving the Muslim Identity
Shaykh (hafizahullah) continued:
من الضروريّ جدًّا: أن نلاحظ حرص الإسلام الكبير على تميّز شخصيّة المسلم عن الكافر
“It is very important for us to note the great emphasis Islam places on the Muslim having a distinct identity from the disbeliever.
One example of this is that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) prohibited resembling the Jews and Christians in greeting.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said:
«لا تسلموا تسليم اليهود والنصارى، فإن تسليمهم بالأكف والرؤوس والإشارة»
’Do not greet in the manner of the Jews and Christians, their greeting is by [gesturing with] palms, heads and [other] gestures.’

Even in this minute detail, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) wanted the identity of the Muslim to remain different from that of the disbeliever.
Ruling on Salam with Gestures
The ‘Ulama have stated that if there is a need to gesture with the hand or eyebrows when giving Salam, then one should also verbally say the Salam together with the gesture. As for merely gesturing without saying Salam, this is not permissible.”

(١١٣٠) – وحدثني ابن أبي عمر ، حدثنا سفيان ، عن أيوب ، عن عبد الله بن سعيد بن جبير ، عن أبيه ، عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قدم المدينة فوجد اليهود صياما يوم عاشوراء، فقال لهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «ما هذا اليوم الذي تصومونه، فقالوا: هذا يوم عظيم، أنجى الله فيه موسى وقومه، وغرق فرعون وقومه، فصامه موسى شكرا، فنحن نصومه فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: فنحن أحق وأولى بموسى منكم، فصامه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأمر بصيامه».
السنن الكبرى للنسائي:
(١٠١٠٠) – أخبرنا إبراهيم بن المستمر قال: حدثني الصلت بن محمد قال: حدثنا إبراهيم بن حميد الرؤاسي، عن ثور قال: حدث أبو الزبير، عن جابر بن عبد الله، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «لا تسلموا تسليم اليهود والنصارى، فإن تسليمهم بالأكف والرؤوس والإشارة».
سنن الترمذي:
(٢٦٩٥) – حدثنا قتيبة، قال: حدثنا ابن لهيعة ، عن عمرو بن شعيب، عن أبيه ، عن جده أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «ليس منا من تشبه بغيرنا، لا تشبهوا باليهود ولا بالنصارى، فإن تسليم اليهود الإشارة بالأصابع، وتسليم النصارى الإشارة بالأكف».
هذا حديث إسناده ضعيف، وروى ابن المبارك هذا الحديث عن ابن لهيعة فلم يرفعه.
