Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) used to recite the following Du’a at the time of distress:
«لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيم، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيم، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيم»
Transliteration: La ilaha illallahul ‘azimul halim, la ilaha illallahu rabbul ‘arshil ‘azim, la ilaha illallahu rabbus samawati wa rabbul ardi wa rabbul ‘arshil karim
Translation: “There is no deity but Allah, The Great, The Forbearing. There is no deity but Allah, Rabb of the Great Throne. There is no deity but Allah, Rabb of the heavens and Rabb of the earth and Rabb of the Noble Throne.”

An Inspiring Incident
Imam Ibn Battal (rahimahullah) said: “Abu Bakr Ar-Raziy (rahimahullah) told me, ‘I was in Isfahan [Iran] by Abu Na’im (rahimahullah) writing Hadith, and there was a Shaykh called Abu Bakr ibn Aliy who was the main Mufti there. Somebody who was jealous of him defamed him and discredited him to the governor, and he was imprisoned. This was during Ramadan. I saw Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) in a dream and Jibril (‘alayhis salam) was on his right moving his lips making Tasbih of Allah constantly. Nabiy (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said to me: “Say to Abu Bakr ibn ‘Aliy to make Du’a using the ‘Du’a of Distress’ that is in Sahih Bukhariy until Allah removes his plight.” After I awoke I informed him and he began to recite the ‘Du’a of Distress’. Shortly thereafter, he was released [from prison].’”

Comment
Ibn Battal (rahimahullah) comments:
“This dream entails an attestation from Nabiy (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) regarding the authenticity of the book of Imam Bukhariy (i.e., it being Sahih). Furthermore, this was in the presence of Jibril (‘alayhis salam) as well.”
Likewise, it serves as an additional inspiration to recite the above Du’a in times of distress with added conviction. One should recite it persistently [without any specific number] with full conviction.
May Allah ‘Azza wa Jalla remove the distress of the Ummah at large. Amin.

قال المؤلف: وحدثنى أبو بكر الرازي قال: كنت بأصبهان عند الشيخ أبي نعيم أكتب عنه الحديث، وكان هناك شيخ آخر يعرف بأبي بكر بن على، وكان عليه مدار الفتيا، فحسده بعض أهل البلد فبغَّاه عند السلطان، فأمر بسجنه، وكان ذلك فى شهر رمضان، قال أبو بكر: فرأيت النبي – عليه السلام – فى المنام وجبريل عن يمينه يحرك شفتيه لا يفتر من التسبيح، فقال لى النبي – عليه السلام -: قل لأبي بكر بن على: يدعو بدعاء الكرب الذى فى صحيح البخارى حتى يفرج الله عنه، فأصبحت فأتيت إليه وأخبرته بالرؤيا، فدعا به فما بقي إلا قليلاً حتى أخرج من السجن. ففي هذه الرؤيا شهادة النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) لكتاب البخاري بالصحة بحضرة جبريل (صلى الله عليه وسلم) والشيطان لا يتصور بصورة النبي فى المنام.
