The Reasons Why a Sahabiy Did Not Convey All That He Heard

24 Jumadal Ula 1448 | 4 November 2026 · 6 min read

A common occurrence in Hadith transmission is the difference between the number of Hadiths a Muhaddith acquired and the number he actually narrated. This is well known and needs no proof, but the following example illustrates the point.

Imam Bukhariy (rahimahullah) is reported to have said: “I selected this book [Sahih Bukhariy] from about six hundred thousand Hadiths.”

(Tarikh Baghdad, vol. 2, pg. 327)

Yet the total number of narrations in Sahih Bukhariy is approximately nine thousand.

(Hudas Sari, pg. 469)

Even if the narrations in his other works are added, the total remains small in comparison to the figure he mentioned. There are several reasons for this, some of which are discussed in a separate article.

The same is true of certain Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum), who narrated only a portion of what they heard from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam). This is not regarded as concealing knowledge, because the duty of conveying the Din rests on the Ummah collectively, not on each individual. Imam Nawawiy (rahimahullah) explains that conveying knowledge is a communal obligation (fard kifayah). Once it becomes widespread, the obligation is fulfilled.

(Sharh Muslim, vol. 11, pg. 169, Hadith: 1679)

The Sahabah Did Not Conceal Any of the Din

Ibn Hazm (rahimahullah) writes that it is impossible for all the Sahabah to have agreed to conceal anything they heard from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam).

(Al-Fisal, vol. 3, pg. 140)

Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) writes that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) commanded his Ummah to convey what they heard from him, so they could not have concealed what Allah commanded them to convey.

(Minhajus Sunnah, vol. 7, pg. 48)

There are several reasons why some Sahabah narrated less than what they actually acquired. The main ones are discussed below.

1. Fear of Erring in Narration

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Zubayr (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) asked his father, Sayyiduna Zubayr (radiyallahu ‘anhu), why he did not narrate as others did. He replied: “I did not part from him, but I heard him say: ‘Whoever lies about me should prepare his abode in the Fire.’”

(Sahih Bukhariy, Hadith: 107)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) explains that he feared falling into an error without realising it, which people would then act upon, trusting his narration.

(Fathul Bari, vol. 1, pg. 201, Hadith: 107)

2. Passing Away Before the Hadiths Spread

Imam Nawawiy (rahimahullah) writes that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrated few Hadiths despite his long companionship, because he passed away before the Hadiths spread and before the Tabi‘un began collecting and memorising them.

(Tahdhibul Asma wal Lughat, vol. 2, pg. 182)

3. Having Fewer Students

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “None of the Companions of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) has more Hadiths from him than me, except ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, because he would write and I would not.”

(Sahih Bukhariy, Hadith: 113)

Yet far fewer narrations have reached us from Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) explains that he mostly lived in Egypt or Ta’if, where students did not travel as they did to Madinah. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) taught in Madinah until his demise, and Imam Bukhariy (rahimahullah) mentions that eight hundred Tabi‘un narrated from him.

(Fathul Bari, vol. 1, pg. 207, Hadith: 113)

4. Keeping the Focus on the Qur’an

Sayyiduna Qarazah ibn Ka‘b (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates that when Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) sent a group of Sahabah to Kufah, he said: “You are going to a people whose chests resound with the Qur’an like the bubbling of a boiling pot… So narrate little from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam), and I am your partner [in this].”

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 28)

In a narration of Mustadrak Hakim, Sayyiduna Qarazah ibn Ka‘b (radiyallahu ‘anhu) states that Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) also said: “Do not begin with Hadiths for them, as they will occupy you [with that]. Keep the Qur’an separate, narrate little from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam), and go on, and I am your partner.” When Sayyiduna Qarazah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) arrived [in Kufah], the people said: “Narrate Hadith to us.” He replied: “Ibnul Khattab [Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu)] has forbidden us.”

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) declared it authentic and ‘Allamah Dhahabiy (rahimahullah) agreed.

(Mustadrak Hakim and Talkhisul Mustadrak, vol. 1, pg. 183, Hadith: 347)

Ibn ‘Abdil Barr (rahimahullah) explains that this was for people who had not yet mastered the Qur’an, which is the foundation of all knowledge.

(Jami‘u Bayanil ‘Ilm, vol. 2, pg. 1003)

5. Withholding What May Cause Fitnah

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “I memorised two vessels [of knowledge] from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam). One I spread. As for the other, if I were to spread it, this throat would be cut.”

(Sahih Bukhariy, Hadith: 120)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) writes that this has been understood to refer to the Hadiths that identified the evil rulers, their conditions and their era. He adds that what Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) spread was more than what he withheld.

(Fathul Bari, vol. 1, pg. 216, Hadith: 120)

6. Being Occupied with ‘Ibadah

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) is also an example of this.
He was more occupied with ‘ibadah than with teaching, so fewer narrations were taken from him.

(Fathul Bari, vol. 1, pg. 207, Hadith: 113)

7. Fear That People Would Rely on It and Leave Out Deeds

Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates that Sayyiduna Mu‘adh (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was riding behind Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam), who called out to him three times: “O Mu‘adh.” Each time he replied: “Here I am, O Rasulullah, at your service.” Then Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “There is no one who testifies sincerely from his heart that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, except that Allah will make the Fire forbidden for him.” He asked: “O Rasulullah, should I not inform the people so they may rejoice?” He replied: “Then they will rely on it [and leave out deeds].” Sayyiduna Mu‘adh (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrated it at the time of his death, fearing sin [of concealing knowledge if he did not report it].

(Sahih Bukhariy, Hadith: 128)

Notes

  1. The Sahabah mentioned above are only examples. The same reasons apply to other Sahabah as well.
  2. A Sahabiy may have narrated a Hadith, yet those after him did not attribute it to him. This may be because:

a) they narrated the same Hadith from another Sahabiy from whom they had also heard it, or

b) they narrated it as Mursal, without naming the Sahabiy.

May Allah Ta’ala grant us the tawfiq to convey His Din to the next generations with sincerity and diligence, and accept it from us. Amin.
