Among the names with which Allah Ta’ala is called in du’a is: Arhamur Rahimin, the Most Merciful of all who show mercy.
The Ambiya (‘alayhimus salam) called to Allah Ta’ala with this name in their most difficult times.
The Du’a of the Ambiya (‘alayhimus salam)
When Nabiy Ayyub (‘alayhis salam) had suffered for many years, he called out to Allah Ta’ala:
وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ
“And [remember] Ayyub, when he called his Rabb: ‘Indeed, hardship has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.’”
(Surah Ambiya, Verse: 83)
Immediately after these words, the Qur’an states:
فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ فَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِ مِن ضُرٍّ
“So We answered him and removed the hardship that was upon him.”
(Surah Ambiya, Verse: 84)
Nabiy Musa (‘alayhis salam) ended his du’a for himself and his brother with the same words:
قَالَ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِأَخِي وَأَدْخِلْنَا فِي رَحْمَتِكَ ۖ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ
“He said: ‘My Rabb, forgive me and my brother, and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.’”
(Surah A’raf, Verse: 151)
Nabiy Ya’qub (‘alayhis salam) said the same when entrusting his son to Allah Ta’ala:
فَاللَّهُ خَيْرٌ حَافِظًا ۖ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ
“Allah is the best Protector, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.”
(Surah Yusuf, Verse: 64)
An Angel Appointed for This Du’a
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said:
“Allah has an angel appointed over whoever says: ‘Ya Arhamar Rahimin.’ Whoever says it three times, the angel says: ‘The Most Merciful of those who show mercy has turned towards you, so ask.’”
(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 1, pg. 728, Hadith: 1996. Also see: At-Targhib, vol. 2, pg. 486)
Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has also recorded the Hadith of Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) passed by a man who was saying: “Ya Arhamar Rahimin.”
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said to him: “Ask, for Allah has looked towards you.”
(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 1, pg. 728, Hadith: 1995)
An Inspirational Incident
My honourable teacher, Al-‘Allamatul Muhaddith Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) often quotes the following incident for inspirational purposes:
Imam Layth ibn Sa’d (rahimahullah) stated that Sayyiduna Zayd ibn Harithah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) hired a mule from a man in Ta’if, on the condition that the owner could stop wherever he chose. The man turned off to a ruin where many people had been killed, and told Sayyiduna Zayd (radiyallahu ‘anhu) to dismount. When he was about to kill him, Sayyiduna Zayd (radiyallahu ‘anhu) asked to perform two rak’ahs. The man said: “Perform them. Those before you also performed salah, and it did not benefit them at all.”
After the salah, as the man approached, Sayyiduna Zayd (radiyallahu ‘anhu) called out: “Ya Arhamar Rahimin.” A voice was heard saying: “Do not kill him.” The man became afraid, went out to look and found no one. He returned, and Sayyiduna Zayd (radiyallahu ‘anhu) called out again: “Ya Arhamar Rahimin.” This happened three times. Then a horseman appeared holding an iron spear with a flame of fire on its tip. He struck the man and he fell dead. The horseman then said: “When you called ‘Ya Arhamar Rahimin’ the first time, I was in the seventh heaven. When you called the second time, I was in the lowest heaven. When you called the third time, I came to you.”
(Al-Isti’ab, vol. 2, pg. 546, edition of Al-Bajawi)
Make It Part of Our Du’as
We should add the recital of Ya Arhamar Rahimin three times in our du’a daily, whether in times of ease or in times of difficulty, illness, debt, fear or worry etc.
May Allah Ta’ala make us among those towards whom He turns with His mercy, and may He accept all our du’as.
